The nation was stunned on Wednesday when a Trump-hating gunman opened fire on GOP congressmen as they practiced for a charity baseball game. The shooter, who was a Bernie Sanders supporter, managed to critically injure Representative Steve Scalise and four others before he was shot dead by Capitol Hill police.

Now, doctors have given an update on Scalise’s condition.

WLJA reported that doctors say Scalise is still in critical condition and that he will need more surgeries.

Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma for the hospital, explained that though Scalise was awake at the scene, he soon went into shock as he was being transported to the hospital. He required a number of blood transfusions, as the transpelvic gunshot wound he sustained penetrated bones, internal organs and blood vessels.

While talking about the wound, Sava said “there are hundreds of fragments and usually there’s more risk involved” to remove all of them from the congressman. However, he added that doctors were able to reduce sedation in order to have the congressman see and speak to family members.

“I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility,” said Sava.

Please keep Steve Scalise in your thoughts and prayers!
